About Us

We were the first to collect college data.

Fifty-five years later, we're still the best.

Our Beginnings

Before Peter Hegener founded Peterson’s with wife, Casey Hegener, he served as the Director of Career Services at Princeton University. Here, students would come for assistance and advice about their plans post-graduation, including learning about graduate programs.

He couldn’t help thinking that the process would be much more efficient if they could point students to a single reference source from which to begin the process. And with that thought, Peterson’s was born.

In order to bring “a more orderly flow of information from graduate schools to undergraduate students,” Hegener launched Peterson’s Guides to Graduate Study in 1966. Designed as a catalogue for graduate programs, the 1968-1969 edition of the Guides, contained information on over 13,000 graduate programs.

Today Peterson’s is privately owned by Triangle Digital Ventures, and provides services beyond data collection, including data analysis, test preparation, enrollment services, and publishing, all within the realm of education. We remain committed to providing students all over the world with the necessary stepping stones from which they can discover and pursue educational and career paths.
